Reviews of the CD
This long awaited 2nd solo release "Pennies" is the first in five
years by singer-songwriter and producer Tom Dean. Tom once again has
used a stellar group of musicians on this project such as Shawn Pelton
on drums (Shawn Colvin) Kevin Barry on guitar (Paula
Cole) Michael Visceglia on bass (Suzanne Vega) Tom Yoder on
fiddle & mandolin and Joyce Andersen on violin and backing vocals and
Don Campbell on banjo and vocals to name a few.
The collaboration of friend and lyricist George Wardwell is very apparent
once again. On 8 of the new songs, George has contributed lyrics with
characters that make you care about them and places that make you want
to visit them or not at all. His metaphors are brilliant and his voice
is an important one in today's music business of cookie cutter pop music
and banal lyrics passed off as poetry.
Lately I've been going down to church a lot
I don't go in - I just walk around the block
and if I should ever get with God up face to face
I'm gonna ask him why he piled up so much sorrow in one place -- G. Wardwell
